Under supervision, the Water Quality Inspector ensures the safety and purity of the water supply by collecting, testing, and monitoring water samples. The role involves performing field inspections, conducting surveys, and maintaining accurate records while adhering to quality and safety standards.

Essential Duties

  • Collect and test water samples at designated distribution locations.
  • Perform field tests for chlorine residual, turbidity, pH, and temperature.
  • Conduct surveys to monitor water quality in the distribution system.
  • Utilize and maintain testing equipment like chlorine residual recorders.
  • Deliver samples to the Division of Water Quality for advanced analysis.
  • Assist engineers with raw water surveys, dead-end mains testing, and inspections.
  • Record, analyze, and report test results.
  • Drive to field sites and maintain accurate documentation of activities.
  • Support data entry and proofread water quality data when assigned to office tasks.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in water quality inspection, control, monitoring, or sampling, or equivalent education and training.
  • Valid State of Illinois driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with personal computer operations.
  • Associate’s degree or higher in a relevant field.
  • Previous experience inspecting water quality or performing field water tests.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare worksheets.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Climb staircases, ladders, and step stools.
  • Operate hydrants.

Selection Process

Applicants will be evaluated based on submitted applications, interviews, and qualifications. Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer software and record-keeping.
  • Relevant educational background and field experience.
  • Strong physical ability to perform job duties effectively.
  • Salary: $44,640 annually.
  • Hours: Various schedules, including a one-hour lunch break.
  • Days Off: Variable.
