This position involves skilled and technical work operating water treatment plant and pumping equipment to process water and meet EPA quality standards. The role requires monitoring pumps, filters, chemical dosages, and ensuring proper operation of equipment. Operators must work rotating shifts and are required to wear appropriate safety gear. The work is dynamic and provides opportunities for advancement through training and experience.
Essential Functions of the Work:
Monitoring and Control:
- Use SCADA systems, control panels, and computers to monitor and regulate flow rates, chemical dosages, and filtration equipment.
- Maintain and adjust levels in distribution systems, ensuring proper operation of pump stations and storage reservoirs.
- Operate air compressors, electric motors, centrifugal pumps, and other machinery necessary to maintain water levels in storage tanks.
Water Quality and Testing:
- Conduct lab tests on water samples, such as turbidity, chlorine residuals, alkalinity, and hardness, adjusting chemical dosages as required.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with water quality standards, conducting chemical adjustments as necessary.
Equipment and System Maintenance:
- Perform inspections of installations for safety, security, and operational efficiency, reporting malfunctions or repairs needed.
- Assist with equipment maintenance and repairs, including filters, pumps, and control systems.
- Perform emergency response duties, such as dealing with chlorine leaks or fires and initiating necessary actions.
Record-Keeping and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of water flow rates, chemical consumption, test results, and other relevant data.
- Assist in the preparation of reports, ensuring compliance with local and federal regulations.
Other Duties:
- Provide assistance with receiving chemical deliveries and handling maintenance tasks as required.
- Respond to customer concerns via the after-hours Water/Sewer phone line.
- May operate as a relief operator or assist in additional tasks as needed.
Minimum Requirements of Work:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or GED.
- One year of general water utility work experience, or a combination of relevant training and experience.
Certifications:
- Ability to obtain an Illinois Public Water Supply Operator’s Class “C” certification within 24 months of hire.
- Ability to obtain a Class “A” certification within 48 months of hire.
- Must pass an annual respiratory surveillance examination and maintain a clean-shaven face for SCBA use.
- Obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 Certification within 18 months.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of water quality standards and water treatment procedures.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot a variety of water treatment equipment, including pumps, filters, generators, and control systems.
- Knowledge of safety standards and emergency procedures in water treatment operations.
- Proficiency in basic mathematics and the ability to complete required documentation and reports.
Physical Requirements of Work:
- Ability to work in challenging environments with exposure to chemicals, loud noises, and various hazards.
- Capability to lift, crawl, bend, climb, and operate machinery as necessary.
- Frequent exposure to odors, humidity, and the physical demands of plant operations.
Supervision:
- Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor, with guidance from rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures. The employee is expected to operate with minimal supervision, completing tasks based on work orders or verbal instructions. Guidance is provided through supervision, regulations, and industry standards.
Public Contact:
- Regular interaction with other City employees for information exchange, emergency assistance, and daily operational coordination.
- Contact with the general public for addressing concerns, providing information, and handling complaints related to water treatment operations.
