The User Experience Librarian leads efforts to assess, improve, and enhance the accessibility and usability of the Paul V. Galvin Library’s digital platforms. This role involves collaborating with library staff, technical teams, and academic departments to drive user-centered web development and design, and advocate for the needs of the diverse library community.
Key Responsibilities
Website & Digital Content Management (25%)
- Oversee and maintain the Galvin Library website and its content.
- Apply user experience best practices to support evolving, user-centered services.
Digital Content Creation & Access (20%)
- Collaborate with the Digital Initiatives Group and other library/university committees.
- Plan and design new digital content or improve access to existing content, including digital collections, research guides, and discovery tools.
Academic Liaison (20%)
- Serve as a liaison to assigned academic departments.
- Maintain good relationships with faculty and staff while supporting the library's needs.
Usability & Accessibility Evaluation (15%)
- Assess the use, usability, and accessibility of digital services.
- Prepare reports with findings and recommend improvements to digital services and website development.
Collaboration on Library Technology (10%)
- Work with the Library Technology Group on planning, support, and renovation of library technology systems.
Other Duties (10%)
- Perform other duties as assigned by the library.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school.
- A bachelor's or higher degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, or equivalent experience in web development.
Experience:
- Two years’ experience in an academic library or web communications and marketing is preferred.
- Experience in web usability testing, digital content management, and the use of relevant software (Drupal, Islandora, etc.).
Skills & Knowledge:
- Understanding of web design principles and accessibility (CSS, SCSS, HTML, PHP).
- Familiarity with W3C standards and cross-browser/platform compatibility issues.
- Experience with open-source technologies and digital library services.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural academic environment and provide excellent customer service.
Additional Information
Physical Requirements:
- Stand for 50% of the time while training staff or assisting patrons.
- Lift up to 25 lbs when moving books or journals.
Certifications:
- MLS from an ALA-accredited library school is required.
