Olive-Harvey College is seeking a Security Assistant to join its campus security team. Under the general supervision of the Director or Assistant Director of Security, the Security Assistant will patrol and monitor campus buildings, grounds, and other areas to ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and the general public. This is an unarmed position that supports the Security Officers and activities within the Office of Security Services (OSS).

General Responsibilities:

  • Campus Patrol:
    Provide a uniformed presence by patrolling the campus both on foot and in a vehicle, monitoring for unusual or suspicious activities, and ensuring security across campus buildings and surrounding grounds.

    • Identify and prevent criminal activity, theft, or vandalism.
  • Incident Reporting:
    Notify supervisors and security officers of any disturbances or irregularities.

    • Contact emergency responders such as police, fire, or medical personnel when required.
  • Access Control & Identification:
    Issue student identification cards by verifying student information.

    • Utilize the ID badging system to print and issue ID cards.
  • Escort Services:
    Provide security escort services for students, faculty, and staff to and from buildings and parking areas.

  • Alarm & Service Calls:
    Respond to service calls and alarms, taking appropriate actions to address incidents and ensuring campus safety.

  • Public Assistance:
    Provide assistance to students, faculty, and the public, offering directions, office locations, and general campus information.

  • Communication & Documentation:
    Operate two-way radio equipment to maintain communication with supervisors and security personnel.

    • Maintain accurate logs of operations and incidents during assigned shifts.
  • Support Security Officers:
    Assist Security Officers in performing security and safety duties as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Associate’s Degree or higher in Criminal Justice preferred.
    • High School Diploma required.
  • Certifications (Preferred):

    • Permanent Employee Registration Card (PERC), issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).
  • Skills & Experience:

    • Proficient in PC desktop software and the operation of security systems like the ID badging system.
    • Valid State of Illinois Driver’s License required.
    • Ability to pass a criminal background check and fingerprint screening.
  • Knowledge & Abilities:

    • Knowledge of safety procedures and basic law enforcement practices.
    • Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with diverse groups.
    • Strong observation skills and attention to detail.
    • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in handling various situations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb stairs and patrol multi-level buildings.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods while patrolling designated areas.
  • Ability to perform essential duties under various physical conditions.
