Description Job Description


  • Security Services & Professionalism:
    Provide security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion, following policies, procedures, and training. Create a confident, approachable, and service-oriented atmosphere for patients, visitors, and team members, while remaining alert, observant, and ethical.

  • Patrols & Inspections:
    Conduct routine patrols both inside and outside facilities to ensure safety and security. Perform inspections to identify vulnerabilities, hazards, and fire conditions. Manage patient valuables, conduct thorough contraband searches, and audit Interim Life Safety Measures.

  • Assistance & Interaction:
    Assist team members, patients, and visitors by offering information, directions, and physical help as needed. Monitor visitor conduct, enforce policies, and confront unauthorized individuals for questioning.

  • Workplace Violence Response & Prevention:
    Respond to service calls involving combative or threatening patients, visitors, or team members. Act as the primary resource for de-escalation and prevent and investigate workplace violence incidents.

  • Emergency Response:
    Plan, practice, and respond to emergencies such as lost or abducted infants, fires, and active threats. Respond immediately to crisis situations and physically intervene according to training when situations have a potential for injury.

  • Incident Investigation & Reporting:
    Investigate incidents on Advocate Aurora property and complete detailed reports. Address and escalate complaints to appropriate leadership, providing necessary documentation.

  • Liaison & Security Awareness:
    Engage in liaison duties to foster strong partnerships with various departments and units. Educate team members on security awareness to enhance overall site security.

  • Law Enforcement Coordination:
    Liaise with state and local law enforcement and first responders. Ensure compliance during law enforcement prisoner patient guard duties and monitor practices to prevent unsafe actions.

  • Training Resource & Support:
    Serve as a training resource for the department. Act as a preceptor for probationary officers, guiding their orientation, onboarding, and assessment. Maintain training records and develop lesson plans for officers not meeting expectations.

  • Administrative Support:
    Assist department leaders with administrative tasks, such as reviewing reports, inspecting uniforms and equipment, and ensuring accuracy and quality in records and materials.

  • Ongoing Training & Certifications:
    Maintain current Department training standards, including radio communications, de-escalation, CPR, clinical restraints, Taser use, and other department-issued equipment training in line with the Annual Training Plan.

License/Registration/Certification Requirements:

  • Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within two years of appointment.
  • Valid Driver’s License issued by the Division of Motor Vehicle.
  • Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card issued by the Illinois State Police or Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
  • Must meet the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation licensing requirements and be able to obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) for Proprietary Personnel within 90 days of hire.
  • Certified in Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) use within 90 days of hire, with periodic recertification thereafter.

Education Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of 30 credit hours in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or a similar course of study from an accredited college or university preferred.

Experience Requirements:

  • 4 years of experience in a security or public safety role, including responding to emergency situations and managing potential risks to patients, visitors, staff, and property.
  • Alternatively, 3 years of work experience with 1 year of experience in a security/safety role and the completion of 30 credit hours in Criminal Justice or related fields.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of safety and security procedures, emergency response protocols, and patient and visitor management.
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, staff, visitors, and law enforcement.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and mitigate security risks in a healthcare environment.
  • High level of physical fitness and capability to intervene during emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of applicable Illinois regulations and security practices, including those specific to healthcare settings.
