Job Description

The⠀position⠀is⠀based⠀at⠀the⠀Plumbing⠀Shop⠀within⠀the⠀Maintenance⠀and⠀Repair⠀Section⠀of⠀Facilities⠀Management⠀Service⠀(FMS}⠀at⠀the⠀VA⠀New⠀Jersey⠀Health⠀Care⠀System,⠀Lyons⠀VA⠀Medical⠀Center.⠀The⠀work⠀involves⠀the⠀maintenance⠀and⠀minor/major⠀repair⠀of⠀the⠀medical⠀center's⠀entire⠀plumbing⠀and⠀steam⠀utility⠀systems⠀and⠀plumbing⠀fixtures⠀and⠀all⠀other⠀associated⠀equipment⠀assigned⠀to⠀the⠀M&R⠀Section⠀of⠀FMS.

The⠀Plumbing⠀Worker⠀assists⠀in⠀the⠀efforts⠀of⠀the⠀Plumbing⠀Shop,⠀which⠀is⠀the⠀primary⠀in-house⠀staff⠀maintaining⠀medical⠀center⠀steam/water⠀distribution⠀systems⠀and⠀plumbing⠀fixtures,⠀which⠀impact⠀on⠀the⠀general⠀operation⠀of⠀the⠀medical⠀center.

Duties may include but are not limited to:

Makes⠀repairs⠀and⠀performs⠀maintenance⠀on⠀a⠀large⠀variety⠀of⠀equipment⠀and⠀systems⠀associated⠀with⠀both⠀potable⠀water⠀and⠀steam⠀distribution⠀systems⠀as⠀well⠀as⠀plumbing⠀fixtures⠀and⠀equipment⠀which⠀include⠀but⠀are⠀not⠀limited⠀to,⠀air⠀compressors,⠀vacuum⠀pumps,⠀compactors,⠀dish⠀machines,⠀steam⠀traps,⠀valves,⠀urinals,⠀commodes,⠀showers,⠀radiators,⠀flushometers,⠀motors⠀and⠀cleans⠀and⠀unplugs⠀stoppage⠀in⠀sanitary⠀and⠀storm⠀lines;
Troubleshoots⠀all⠀equipment⠀correctly⠀with⠀technical⠀assistance⠀from⠀supervisor⠀or⠀journeyman⠀if⠀needed;
Maintenance⠀and⠀repair⠀work⠀is⠀performed⠀during⠀the⠀regular⠀tour⠀of⠀duty;
Assignments⠀include⠀regular⠀maintenance⠀and⠀repair⠀projects⠀and⠀repairs⠀to⠀equipment⠀or⠀systems⠀of⠀an⠀urgent⠀or⠀emergency⠀nature⠀which⠀result⠀from⠀malfunctions⠀or⠀breakdowns⠀occurring⠀during⠀the⠀tour⠀and⠀which⠀need⠀to⠀be⠀either⠀restored⠀to⠀working⠀order,⠀repaired⠀or⠀shut⠀down⠀until⠀regular⠀maintenance⠀and⠀repair⠀crews⠀can⠀complete⠀repairs;
Performs⠀preventive⠀maintenance⠀and⠀inspections⠀as⠀assigned;
Performs⠀visual⠀observations⠀or⠀operational⠀tests⠀on⠀equipment⠀to⠀determine⠀the⠀nature⠀of⠀repair⠀work⠀required;
Determines⠀whether⠀equipment⠀can⠀be⠀repaired⠀or⠀restored⠀to⠀working⠀order,⠀selects⠀tools,⠀equipment⠀and⠀replacement⠀parts⠀and⠀completes⠀needed⠀repairs;⠀and
Responsible⠀for⠀observing⠀prescribed⠀safety⠀regulations⠀and⠀for⠀handling⠀materials⠀and⠀tools⠀in⠀a⠀manner⠀which⠀will⠀not⠀create⠀obstacles⠀in⠀traveled⠀areas⠀or⠀result⠀in⠀injury⠀to⠀self⠀or⠀others.
