Position Overview: Pharmacy Technician

As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting the pharmacy team. Responsibilities include preparing and managing medications, processing drug orders, and handling cytotoxic agents when required. This position involves regular interaction with pharmacists, patients, and team members to ensure efficient operations and exceptional care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Input and process new orders and prescription refills under pharmacist supervision.
  • Prepare labels for medications, including oral doses, injectables, and large-volume parenterals.
  • Select, prepare, and distribute medications for new orders, unit-dose carts, and outpatient prescriptions.
  • Handle cytotoxic agents and ensure proper authorization for unit-dose carts.
  • Restock shelves, inspect inventory for proper storage and expiration, and prepare bulk medications as needed.
  • Maintain the pharmacy's organization and cleanliness.
  • Screen phone calls and relay messages effectively.
  • Follow service principles that emphasize teamwork, innovation, and excellence.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED (required); two years of college with a math course preferred.
  • At least one year of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Licensure or eligibility as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in Illinois.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to follow precise instructions.
  • Proficiency in unit-dose system operations and aseptic techniques.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong mathematical abilities for calculations and record-keeping.
  • Competency in computer data entry and English language skills.
  • Manual dexterity, color differentiation, and physical ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
  • Understanding of age-specific care for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients.

Working Conditions:

  • Potential exposure to pathogens, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.
  • Rotating shifts and weekend work are required.
  • Assignments across various pharmacy areas, including the main pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy, and IV additive room (excluding hematology).
