Key Duties and Responsibilities

Medication Management

  • Interpret prescriptions, prepare and label medications accurately, and record necessary data electronically.
  • Restock emergency carts and manage automated dispensing machines, including verifying, stocking, and replacing outdated medications.
  • Identify basic therapeutic issues (e.g., duplicate therapy) and notify the pharmacist for clinical intervention.
  • Ensure appropriate handling and storage of high-alert, hazardous, refrigerated, and controlled substances.

Training and Oversight

  • Assist in training pharmacy technician students and junior technicians.

Order Processing

  • Review prescription orders for technical accuracy post-pharmacist review, ensuring the dispensed product matches the drug and dosage ordered.

Other Duties

  • Conduct inventory management, including identifying expired medications and ensuring stock levels are adequate.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to meet operational needs.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizen (non-citizens may be considered per VA policy).
  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Education/Experience:
    • No minimum education requirement, though a high school diploma or equivalent is necessary.
    • A combination of qualifying education and experience may be used to meet requirements.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to lift, carry, or push up to 35 lbs. and engage in physical activities such as bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

Grade Determination (GS-06)

  • Experience: At least one year of equivalent experience at the GS-05 level.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):
    • Understanding of federal/state pharmacy laws and inventory procedures.
    • Proficiency in pharmacy systems and dispensing equipment.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients.

Preferred Experience

  • One year of inpatient hospital pharmacy experience.

Additional Information

  • Vaccination Requirements: Annual influenza vaccination and full COVID-19 vaccination are mandatory for VA Health Care Personnel.
  • Probationary Period: Required for new hires.
  • Veterans’ Preference: May not apply under certain VA hiring provisions for FY25.
