We are seeking a Pharmacy Technician to join our team. This position plays a crucial role in assisting pharmacists with medication preparation, distribution, inventory maintenance, and supporting patient care.
General Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician will support pharmacists in preparing and distributing medications, maintaining inventory, and documenting patient information. The role involves age-appropriate care for adult and geriatric patients under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technician will report to the Pharmacy Manager and Director of Pharmacy Services.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Medication Preparation & Delivery:
- Aseptically prepare IV medications according to USP Chapter 797 and handle hazardous medications per USP Chapter 800.
- Perform non-sterile compounding according to USP Chapter 795 standards.
- Fill medication orders, unit-dose medications, and replenish automated drug dispensing machines (ADDMs).
- Deliver controlled substances and medications to patient care areas.
- Serve as a courier for medication deliveries as scheduled or requested.
Inventory Control:
- Monitor and manage medication stock in the pharmacy and patient care areas.
- Check deliveries, inspect for expired or recalled medications, and return stock to vendors.
- Prepack bulk medications in unit-dose packages.
- Contribute to inventory control and help reduce medication wastage.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety:
- Adhere to federal, state, and hospital regulations regarding medication storage and handling.
- Ensure compliance with drug diversion prevention and proper disposal of pharmaceutical waste.
- Assist in departmental quality improvement activities and promote patient safety.
Record Keeping & Data Entry:
- Use computer systems to manage billing, reports, and medication tracking.
- Maintain prepackaging and medication delivery records.
- Comply with all hospital policies related to confidentiality and security (HIPAA).
Customer Service & Teamwork:
- Provide excellent service to patients, visitors, and staff.
- Work collaboratively with other healthcare professionals and departments.
- Train and orient new employees, and assist coworkers as needed.
- Participate in staff meetings, in-services, and educational sessions.
Adherence to Standards:
- Be punctual and dependable in reporting to work.
- Maintain a neat, professional appearance and adhere to hospital dress code.
- Work under stressful situations and resolve conflicts professionally.
- Keep pharmacy areas clean, organized, and safe for staff and patients.
Job Requirements & Characteristics:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 18 years old.
- Knowledge of pharmacy regulations and laws.
- Current Pharmacy Technician License by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
- One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of pharmacy practice and regulations.
- Proficiency in computer systems for managing medication orders and billing.
- Ability to handle hazardous medications safely.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and handle multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Working Conditions:
- Occasional travel between hospital campuses may be required.
- Repetitive hand usage, such as preparing IV admixtures and using a computer keyboard.
- Lifting up to 40 lbs. and moving boxes, equipment, and supplies.
- Extended periods of standing, sitting, or walking may be required (4-8 hours).
- Must be able to physically operate relevant pharmacy equipment.
Occupational Hazards:
- Exposure to infectious patients, hazardous substances (e.g., cytotoxic drugs), and sharp objects (e.g., needles).
- Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting techniques are not followed.
