The Metadata + Digital Projects Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Head of Library Special Collections + Digital Services to coordinate cataloging efforts and manage metadata for various collections, including the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, Fashion Resource Center, and Textile Resource Center. The role involves overseeing digitization projects, metadata creation, file management, and day-to-day cataloging tasks in a variety of library systems, with a focus on enhancing the management of digital collections.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Cataloging & Data Entry: Responsible for cataloging and maintaining records in multiple systems, including data entry and metadata production.
- Project Coordination: Collaborate with the Head of Library Special Collections + Digital Services and other stakeholders to develop and manage digital collections metadata workflows and projects.
- Classification: Classify materials according to the Library of Congress Classification and other metadata schemas appropriate for various collections.
- Policy & Procedure Development: Contribute to project planning, policy creation, and development of best practices for digital collections.
- Metadata & Digital Projects Support: Assist with metadata creation, data maintenance, and the management of digital library projects.
- Student Supervision: Hire, train, and supervise student assistants for cataloging and metadata-related tasks.
- Training: Provide training for staff on metadata creation standards, vocabularies, and tools.
- Collaboration & Support: Work with SAIC faculty, students, and other researchers to assist with image research and digital collection management.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required, with a preference for degrees in visual arts, design, or architecture.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of experience working with metadata and digital collections.
- Supervisory Experience: Supervisory experience preferred.
- Technical Expertise: Experience with Drupal, Islandora, and other digital repositories and library management systems is preferred.
- Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, metadata schemas, and digital preservation practices.
- Skills: Proficiency in office hardware and software, attention to detail, and ability to quickly learn new systems.
