Rutgers University is seeking a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) in New Brunswick, NJ. This role involves operating various types of heavy equipment for utility excavation and maintenance across the university, including backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, and snow removal equipment. The operator will serve as a lead person on excavation and utility crews, ensuring the protection of university assets and supporting maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a wide range of heavy machinery for underground utility work, maintaining precision to avoid disruptions to university operations.
- Guide and supervise utility operation workers, maintaining both internal and external communications with trades personnel and contractors.
- Conduct routine maintenance on equipment, including cleaning, fluid checks, and repairs; document machine hours for preventive maintenance.
- Handle snow plowing and other emergency weather responses, particularly during adverse conditions.
- Follow OSHA guidelines and utility markout designations to ensure safe and compliant excavation practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school or vocational school diploma (or equivalent).
- Experience: Minimum 4 years of experience in utility excavation and operation of heavy equipment.
- Licensing: CDL Class A license required, with a Rutgers Defensive Driving Course completion.
- Skills: Strong communication skills, ability to follow detailed instructions, extensive knowledge of utility piping, and experience with snowplow and sewer jetting equipment.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Salary and Benefits:
- Salary: $49,719.83 – $67,680.50 annually.

Additional Conditions:
- Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
