The Grounds Crewmember is responsible for maintaining, caring for, and modifying campus grounds and landscapes. This role involves operating various electrically-powered and gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and tools, as well as performing maintenance and minor repairs on this equipment. The Crewmember will also engage in planting, cultivating, trimming, and general upkeep of the grounds.
Key Responsibilities:
Grounds Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, including lawnmowers, trimmers, and hand tools.
- Perform planting, cultivating, trimming, and other landscaping duties to maintain the beauty of the campus grounds.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemicals as directed, following safety protocols.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform routine maintenance on groundskeeping equipment to ensure it remains in good working order.
- Make minor repairs to equipment as necessary.
Safety & Compliance:
- Read and understand work orders, instructions, and safety guidelines related to equipment operation and chemical usage.
- Safely dispose of and store solvents, chemicals, and other materials used in grounds services.
General Labor:
- Engage in general labor duties, including lifting, carrying, walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- Assist with seasonal shifts in work schedules and area reassignments as needed.
Education, Work Experience, and Requirements:
- Completion of the 10th grade is required. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Minimum of three years of experience as a laborer, gardener, groundskeeper, or in similar work involving general labor duties, including grounds maintenance.
- Must be able to read English sufficiently to understand written work orders, instructions, and safety guidelines.
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry groundskeeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching.
- Ability to operate manual, electrically-powered, and gasoline-powered equipment.
- Ability to access facilities and areas via stairs or ladders up to 15 feet for tasks like tree trimming.
- Must be able to work outdoors year-round, in various weather conditions.
Working Conditions:
- Work may involve exposure to loud noises and extremes of heat or cold.
- Handling and applying chemical compounds that could be hazardous if instructions are not followed correctly.
- Wearing protective gear, which may be uncomfortable, is often required.
- Position is subject to changes in schedules as needed by management, including seasonal shifts and area reassignment.
