The Forensic Mortuary Technician I role at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) involves supporting the investigation of deaths within NYC, particularly those occurring under unusual or suspicious circumstances. This position plays a critical part in forensic science and public health by assisting with autopsies, handling remains, and managing mortuary operations.

Role Overview

Forensic Mortuary Technicians assist with autopsy procedures, document case details, and ensure the morgue is clean and properly maintained. Responsibilities include managing remains, driving to death scenes, recording fingerprints, and preparing reports. The role requires operating a motor vehicle and handling remains on-site.

Core Responsibilities

  • Autopsy and Remains Management: Assist Medical Examiners during autopsies, manage intake and release of remains, perform case reconciliations, and transport remains for city burials.
  • Documentation: Utilize systems like CMS and EDRS to maintain records for cases, including death certificates and burial permits.
  • Morgue Maintenance: Ensure morgue cleanliness and sanitation and report any incidents or complaints.
  • Driving Requirements: Drive to locations to collect remains and transport them as needed.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • Level I: One year of experience in mortuary or autopsy work.
    • Level II: Two years of experience, including mortuary or autopsy work.
    • Level III: Four years of experience, with at least two years in a supervisory role.
