The Financial Aid Counselor is responsible for communicating with new students and their families through various channels such as in-person meetings, phone calls, and emails, providing them with information about available financial aid programs and general guidelines. This role involves assisting with application processing and awarding of major state and federal loans and grants, as well as reviewing and modifying awards based on various appeals, including special circumstances, independent status, and need-based requests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling to new students and parents on available financial aid options, application procedures, and eligibility criteria.
  • Review, process, and modify financial aid awards based on appeals such as special circumstances or non-need-based adjustments.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of DePaul University’s student financial processes to provide clear and comprehensive guidance.
  • Communicate about state and federal loan and grant programs, as well as institutional aid programs.
  • Participate in open houses, financial aid sessions, and other outreach activities.
  • Assist in the administration of financial aid programs, with total program funds exceeding $150 million.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • At least 1 year of experience in student financial aid administration and knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations is preferred.
  • NASFAA Credentials are a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain financial concepts to students and families.
  • Ability to manage change and adapt to flexible work hours.
  • Capability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data management.
  • Must not be delinquent on federal loans or owe federal grant overpayments.
