Description Job Description


The counselor will be responsible for counseling students about financial aid options, application procedures, eligibility criteria, and state and federal loan/grant programs. This role also involves reviewing and processing awards, modifying them based on appeals, and participating in various student financial aid events and activities.

 You'll Do:

  • Student Counseling: Provide advice to new students and parents through phone consultations and walk-in sessions, explaining available financial aid programs and educational financing options.
  • Award Review & Modification: Review and process financial aid awards based on various appeals, including special circumstances, independent status, and other student needs.
  • Expertise Development: Become well-versed in DePaul University's student processes, including serving as a liaison to the admissions office for traditional and non-traditional students.
  • Communication: Provide clear communication about the processing and awarding of state and federal loan/grant programs and institutional programs.
  • Event Participation: Represent the financial aid office at open houses, financial aid help sessions, and other recruitment events.
  • Program Administration: Participate in the administration of student aid programs, managing significant dollar amounts in federal, state, and institutional funding.

 You'll Need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in student financial aid administration, financial programs, or student processes is preferred.
  • Knowledge: Strong understanding of federal and state financial aid regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Certifications: NASFAA credentials are a plus.
  • Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial aid concepts to students and families.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on accuracy in data analysis, record-keeping, and financial calculations.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and view computer monitors.
  • Other Requirements: Must not be delinquent or in default on a federal loan or owe an overpayment of federal grant funds.
