Field Technician

Zayo is seeking a Field Technician II who will play a key role in the installation, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of various telecommunications equipment, including SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, and Ethernet systems. The position primarily involves utility locating (80%) and installation/facility maintenance (20%). The candidate will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient completion of tasks related to the telecommunications infrastructure within a defined service area between Chicago, IL and Elkhart, IN.

Key Responsibilities:

• Utility Locating (80%):

  • Locate and mark underground utilities, ensuring accurate identification and safe procedures.
  • Complete required documentation for the locating and marking process.

• Installation and Maintenance (20%):

  • Install, test, and commission various telecommunications equipment (SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, Ethernet).
  • Perform troubleshooting and maintenance on optical transmission systems, including OTDR, Ethernet, and SONET acceptance testing.
  • Support network construction activities and assist with Fiber Engineering paperwork, including splice engineering packages, route forms, and as-built documents.
  • Monitor contractor and subcontractor activities, including conduit installation, cable placement, and fiber splicing.
  • Conduct site surveys for building entrance construction requirements and equipment space availability.

• Testing and Commissioning:

  • Conduct OTDR trace analysis, optical power meter testing, and fiber optic patch cord installation and testing.
  • Perform cable splicing and fiber acceptance testing, ensuring the quality of network connections.

• On-Call Support:

  • Participate in a local on-call schedule rotation for emergency support.

• Proactive Maintenance:

  • Identify and resolve potential network issues before they impact services, using routine Preventive Maintenance Inspections (PMI).

Qualifications:

• Location: Must reside within 25 miles of the fiber route between Chicago, IL and Elkhart, IN and be able to reach Chicago within two hours.

• Experience:

  • At least 2 years of telecom field experience, including installing, testing, and turning up equipment such as SONET, TDM, DWDM, IP, or Ethernet.
  • Experience in underground utility marking, construction monitoring, and construction inspection.
  • Proficient in the use of fiber optic cable locators (e.g., Metrotech vLocML2).
  • Strong technical skills in troubleshooting and maintaining telecommunications equipment, electrical systems, DC power plants, and critical infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with telecommunications standards (e.g., ITU, IEEE, NEBS).
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, procedure documents, and vendor manuals.

• Technical Proficiency:

  • Strong background in optical, electrical, and power testing equipment for telecommunications.
  • Capable of independently handling network issues or overseeing subordinates for issue resolution.

• Skills:

  • Strong analytical, technical, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and work self-reliantly when needed.
