The Computer Systems Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring central and backup site servers, job schedulers, peripheral equipment, and various computer environments. This role includes handling large-scale computer systems, monitoring for system efficiency, and addressing technical issues. The position requires independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to handle sensitive situations.

Essential Duties:

  • System Operation:

    • Operate and monitor all components of the Lottery’s computer systems, including completing jobs and processing daily draws within specific shift time frames.
    • Plan workloads, workflows, and priorities for job scheduling.
    • Make necessary corrections to complete work on schedule.
  • Emergency Handling:

    • Handle emergency situations such as computer hardware failures, software problems, and inclement weather following approved guidelines.
  • Reporting and Balancing:

    • Follow procedures to balance reports from daily draws, ICS Systems, and vendor reports.
    • Resolve draw discrepancies and balancing issues according to standard operating procedures.
  • Disaster Recovery:

    • Assist in the development, implementation, and testing of the Lottery’s Information Technology Disaster Recovery Plan (ITDRP) and Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP).
  • Monitoring and Maintenance:

    • Monitor environmental and electrical power conditions to maintain optimal operating conditions for computer systems.
    • Maintain operating records and document daily actions in the online operator log (OPERLOG).
  • Communication and Coordination:

    • Communicate with other shifts, SNCS, and SDS programming/system staff to resolve issues.
    • Coordinate problem resolution after normal business hours and train other Computer Operations staff as needed.
  • General Duties:

    • Operate a personal computer in a Microsoft Windows environment for correspondence and documentation.
    • Request and coordinate service for computer systems as needed.
    • Assist Tallahassee operations staff as needed.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge:

    • Basic IT terminology, IT operations, equipment, procedures, and workflow.
    • Ability to interpret and respond to computer error messages and detect equipment malfunctions.
  • Skills:

    • Operating a variety of data processing equipment.
    • Communicating technical data processing information effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Planning, organizing, and coordinating work assignments.
  • Abilities:

    • Learn quickly and work independently and with a team.
    • Determine priorities and make timely decisions during normal and critical situations.
    • Follow operational and maintenance procedures and explain their benefits.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:

    • High school diploma or equivalent, with two (2) years of experience in operating personal computers and peripheral equipment, or
    • High school diploma or equivalent, one (1) year of experience in operating personal computers and peripheral equipment, and completion of a vocational/technical program in data processing (excluding data entry).
  • Substitution:

    • College coursework in data processing (excluding data entry) may substitute for one year of experience, provided it includes at least four (4) courses in data processing.
