The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking an Accessibility Engineer to join the Technology Solutions team. This full-time, benefits-eligible role focuses on enhancing digital accessibility across UIC’s online platforms, ensuring compliance with WCAG, ADA, and other accessibility standards.

Key Responsibilities

Accessibility Engineering

  • Conduct audits of digital platforms, including websites, mobile apps, and e-learning tools, using automated and manual testing.
  • Identify accessibility barriers and recommend/implement solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with Section 508, WCAG 2.1, and ADA standards.
  • Utilize tools like Deque Axe to monitor accessibility performance.
  • Develop and deliver training workshops for developers, designers, and content creators.
  • Stay updated on accessibility best practices and advancements.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Provide guidance on integrating accessibility into digital content creation and development processes.
  • Act as a campus advocate for accessibility.
  • Participate in special projects and contribute to university-wide accessibility improvements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of IT experience in system administration and operations, including configuration, maintenance, backup/recovery, and user account management.
  • Demonstrated experience with accessibility testing using assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers, voice recognition software).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ARIA attributes.
  • At least 3 years of experience in digital accessibility or web development with a focus on accessibility testing.
  • In-depth knowledge of WCAG 2.1, ADA, Section 508 guidelines, and accessibility laws.
  • Experience with accessibility tools like WAVE, Axe, or similar.
  • User testing experience with individuals with disabilities.
  • Certifications such as Trusted Tester (DHS) or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS).
  • Familiarity with higher education environments.
